DEREKSTAR PRESENTS: “Black Heart”

What do you think of when you hear the words “Black Heart”? Well, it was a tricky one for us too! Please come down to Harlem Place Cafe on January 13th and see what our artists were inspired to create after we decided to work with this theme.

We will be a part of the Downtown LA Artwalk for the FIRST time! This is a big deal for us and we would love to have your support. Here’s what you have to look forward to…

Making Progress

Hellooooo Friends! If you are in or around the OC come thru to one of the newest open mic events, Common Ground. I will be taking my artwork down at the Coffee Studio in about a week and putting it up @ the VAALA Cultural Center on Sept. 2, 2010.

Prints will also be for sale.

Come kick it and enjoy a fabulous night of spoken word, music, and art. Hope to see some of the homies as well as make new friends.

Jenny is a cool chick. She is laid back and will whoop you at any recreational activity. She loves music, especially hip hop and just chillin’ with the homies. Don’t get it twisted cuz this womyn is hella fashionable but down to earth. She is someone you want as your bff.

I made this piece for my bff Jenny a year ago. The description above captures her essence and what I was thinking of when I made this piece.

The Magic Garage adventure has taken us through various venues throughout the last 5 years, and this time around the MG crew is thrilled to collaborate with LA’s Catalyst Artist Collective.

This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure”, inspired by a series of gamebooks where the reader makes choices during the story to determine the plot and outcome. It may just be the best Magic Garage yet!

Every year, Kababayan holds it’s annual cultural art exhibit, an event for local artists and Kababayan members to showcase many different types of art. The theme for this event, entitled “Articulture: The Cultivation of Cultural Creativity,” focuses on the growth of the individual through the use of art and culture. The exhibit will feature many types of art through the use of a variety of mediums such as digital, visual, performance, and live art.

Various performances such as dance, spoken word, and theater, will occur periodically while you walk around admiring the different pieces of visual art created by local artists and some of your very own Kababayan! Cultural art exhibit is a way for Kababayan to create a formal artistic outlet in which artists of Kababayan can showcase artistic talents as well as encourage the cultivation of human creativity and individual expression.
